People are asking me what they can expect when they make an appointment to see if they are dealing with Irlen Syndrome. The first step is to get “screened.” During this visit you will be challenged to do some simple visual tasks to help you realize whether you are a candidate or not. Toward the end of this you view printed material with various colored plastic overlays or filters which come in 10 colors. Usually one will be especially helpful. At the end of this, if you can see the benefit of a filter, then you will consider scheduling a followup appointment with the diagnostician to determine which lens or contact lens color tint will benefit you. This will be totally different from the overlay color you preferred. Note that you may be screened by a trained screener and then see a qualified diagnostician to resolve the lens tint. Sometimes both visits are with the diagnostician and the two processes can be handled with either two appointments or sometimes with both scheduled on the same day with a break in between the two. Scheduling both on the same day can be taxing. Even if you do not wear corrective lenses you can obtain “Plano” lenses with no correction. Considering the time required for the processes I find the charges quite reasonable. No, this is not covered by insurance, but it can be a life-changing discovery. It certainly is not just about reading better.
